The Zigarelli 5: Persuaded to Persuade

Stewarding donorship is hard work. Countless hours are spent researching, developing relationships, and considering next steps. Oftentimes the investment, energy, resources of time, finances, and human capital produce little to no result. Nevertheless, the challenges of donor development does not minimize the importance of the work itself and the tremendous satisfaction that can be gained. This body of thought will explore 5 of Zigarelli's 15 Biblical Principles of Persuasion in an attempt to discover how the implementation of the principles selected can be employed in an approach to the effective transformation of donors. At this juncture it may be important to outline Zigarelli’s definition of influence

As a result conversations about financial matters to the degree necessary to ensure financial health and maturity are sadly missing from congregational discourse. In contrast to the understanding of money as secular the church must reclaim the spirituality of giving and the idea of money as an integral part of the spiritual life of the believer and the church at large.
A part of reclaiming the spiritual aspect of giving and stewardship involves the discipline of prayer. As Christian Stewardship officers we have a responsibility to seek God’s guidance, wisdom, and insight on all matters including those related to fundraising activities. I would implement Zigarelli’s Prayer Principle of Persuasion by, organizing prayer cells to pray for the stewardship project itself, the potential donors, and the stewardship officers engaged in the work. All too often the work of stewardship begins without a clearly outlined God breathed agenda.
Knowing your audience is a critical part of transforming donors. Demographic research creates an awareness of culture, age, ethnicity socioeconomic background, customs, and behaviors. An awareness of these factors are certainly beneficial to the development process. I would conduct a demographic survey in hopes of capturing as much information as

Building solid, lasting relationships are essential to donor transformation. The stewardship officer has to be willing to be vulnerable. This requires sharing authentically with potential donors. There is a dynamic shift that takes place when individuals galvanize around commonalities. In order to use this principle effectively stewardship officers have to perfect the art of listening. It is by listening intently that we discover donors hearts, uncover their philosophical positions on giving, and finally identify the essence of the donors

In Ron Suskind’s book, Hope in the Unseen, Suskind criticizes the Scripture Church, the church Cedric and Barbara attend, calling attention to Bishop Long and the corruption in the church. Bishop long is the head pastor if the scripture church raising it into what it is today; the large populace of the church are poor African Americans, however Bishop Long himself is a well of man being in possession of a “comfortable house in Mitchellville, Maryland”(148) quite foreign to his constituents who live in small houses or no house at all. Suskind is criticizing Bishop Long not giving the money back to the people in need but to only keep it for himself and profit while many of his pupils live without a dollar to spare. Often in Cedric’s life his mother, Barbara has given her last dollar to the church something that Bishop long has often requested of his flock saying that if you give your last dollar “Then, and only then, will you know what faith is all about.”(30).…

In the article “A model of Christian Charity” written by Governor John Winthrop mainly talks about how society is divided in two different groups by the rich and the non wealthy people. Winthrop’s article is well written by using the three persuasive strategies of the “Rhetorical triangle” to have a better understanding. Moreover , throughout his paper is completely evident that he uses logos ,ethos ,and pathos. First of all , he uses logos when he gave actual texts from the bible that explained that wealth meant gold and silver in Ezequiel 16:17.Also , he used evidence from John 4:8 to demonstrate that “love is the bond of perfection”. John Winthrop talks about his rationalization for the people’s behavior in the community.…

The impression I received from Kenny is, in his opinion, money is the only way one should donate. This is very evident with every example that he gives and also evident in his conclusion, he ends the essay by saying, “Much better to stop giving the stuff we don’t want – and start giving them the money they do”. (255) While repetition may be considered a good literary technique to emphasize important points; it can also create a reaction to those who disagree with his biased claims. By continuously repeating that money is the best form of donation, it appears to me that author is trying to coerce readers into agreeing to his claim. While this claim is very subjective, it can create other issues, such as people may view this as giving is only considered charitable if what is being given is money.…

While most people believe that non-profit are doing great public work, these organizations are often contributing to the increase of elitism and capitalist forms through corporate influence. Non-profit industrial complex (NPIC) is as a “set of symbolic relationships that link political and financial technologies of state and owning class control with surveillance over public political ideology, including and especially emergent progressive and leftist social movement” (Smith 8). This simply means that NPIC offers a space where corporations can control and authorize social justice movements through their financial support. It permits public monies to fall in the control of private corporation through foundations. The nonprofit industrial complex…

Each year I have listened to the budget committee and council debate pay increases for the staff with a heavy heart knowing I would soon be trying to validate my own worth. Due to my experience, I have long struggled with the role of the pastor in setting budgets as well as the privacy, or lack thereof, regarding the amount of money donated. However, Christopher’s four reasons, as outlined by Jeff above, offer a strong case for the pastoral awareness of individual tithes and offerings. The thought of deliberately ignoring the tithes and offerings as the equivalent to “clergy malpractice” encouraged my change in opinion (loc. 466, Chapter 2)!…

Does that have any meaning, though, if the end result - people’s lives being saved - is the same? Like mentioned prior, some of the people in the world have no other option. Whether it is a morally correct thing for one to donate when considering their motives, is not something that would cross the minds of those who are living in extreme poverty where those around them are dying and they are simply waiting their turn. Singer states that philanthropists such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are donating large sums of money towards solutions to global poverty, not due to motivations of personal divine salvation, but rather more likely out of a sense of duty. So the motivations of those who donate should simply be to better the state of his fellow man, but as well as if there were a government mandated requirement to donate then that would remove the question of if it 's their personal motives or not out of the question…
