4th Grade Reflection Essay

Great Essays
Back in the 4th grade, I would always struggle with writing stories. The reason that I had to write every week was because there was a North Carolina Writing Test for 4th graders. At the beginning of the week, I would always be required to write a story that fitted the assigned prompt. Ms. Miller, my 4th grade teacher, read to us the instructions of the writing prompt before I could start on my outline for this paper. One of the examples of the instructions was “Make sure to proofread your essay for grammar and spelling errors.” Ms. Miller would always give me a blank paper, so that I was able to make plan out what I was going to write. ¬¬ On the blank paper, I wrote down an abbreviation called BME. I took this outline from my 3rd grade. …show more content…
The writing assignment was about me finishing the story it already been given to me at the beginning of this assignment. I remember erasing everything that I have written and the paper getting wrinkle from the erasing. As soon as I was starting the assignment again for the millionth time, my dad made an announcement that he wanted the whole family to go to the movie theater. I was cheerful because I was able to put off the writing assignment till the next day. As soon as the movie was over, I realized I did not want to put off the assignment till later because I would have nightmares of writing assignments. Before I attempted to do this tiring assignment, I would write on a separate piece of paper what I was going to write instead of writing and erasing constantly. I would write slowly like a turtle because I was afraid of my handwriting being so sloppy that my teacher would not be able to read my …show more content…
First, I would write my outline on the blank sheet of paper, so I was able to write it neatly. I remember the prompt vividly in my mind. The prompt was about a mysterious watch that was given to me. I wrote down the mysterious clock was able to magically to transform me in the clock’s setting. The setting of the clock was about a mystery that was never solved in the late 1800’s. As I was writing this essay, I remember my dad’s comments about my writing. I tried my best to make sure that I did not make the same mistake on my previous stories. Even though I completed the assigned prompt earlier than the time, I proofread my essay at least five times. As soon as time was up, I felt confident that I did a great job. Two months later, my teacher was going to talk to me privately about my score. I remember being so worried waiting in line to know what score I earned. Ms. Miller explained to me that I did well, and I would be able to enjoy my summer vacation away from school. When I got home that day, I told my mom and dad that I passed the writing

It was the year of 2014 going into 2015 and I was an eighth grader. This was my second year attending Bennett Academy charter school. My English language arts teacher, Ms. Walton, had told to my classmates and me that in mid-November we will begin to start our huge assignment. That assignment was to be completed before the graduation date of May 21st, 2015. Ms. Walton told us that we need to have at least fifty pages and no less.…

The day we expected to get our assignments back, I felt calm and confident. When I received my paper and saw what my grade was and the comments my teachers made, my whole mood changed. The grade and the remarks were nothing of what I expected, and the grade was well below what I normally score. After this assignment I started to give up because I did not think I would ever do as good and that my writing, in fact, did not improve at all, but Mrs. Moore told me not give up and to keep trying. The talk we had made me realize that I need to learn from this experience and continue to work hard and do my absolute best.…

Honestly, I am not a very motivated person. I tend to try hard in school for the sole purpose of receiving an A. I never had thought of learning as an activity, but rather a priority. A priority that exists once again, for the purpose of getting an A. In my head, if I received an A, I would feel secure and my life would be able to move along smoothly. Receive a B, and my whole world would stop. Sadly, it seemed almost impossible for me to receive even close to a B when it came to writing.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Like most people, the third grade was a highly intense time. This was the period in which you had to decipher between wanting to learn how to multiply or learn how to divide first. Or for me the most difficult decision may have been choosing between kickball and tetherball during recess. But I had an issue of seeing adults doing things and if it was simple I would do them too. For me as a child I had what many considered an old sold.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

Before English 1157, I wanted to cry at the thought of writing an essay. I had always considered myself to be a horrible writer and I just had to accept the fact that I would never be good at it. Instead of being taught how I could improve my essays in high school, the teachers were only worried about the 5-paragraph essay format. With that being said, Dr. Rutledge mentioned how he hated that format and would give us an F if we used it.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Parents and teachers often have trouble deciphering what they wrote, and also students struggle with reading their own notes sometimes. Graham remarks that, “All beginning writers struggle with fluency and legibility to some extent, and that inevitably affects their approach to composing. Young writers typically cope with the multiple demands of handwriting and composing by minimizing the composing process (planning, organizing, etc.)” (Graham, 2010, p.50). If there is early attention put into handwriting about student’s legibility there will be a decrease in the likelihood of them becoming poor writers in the…

When it comes to Composition 1, I learned a lot. In the beginning I wanted to learn how to become a better and creative writer. After finishing Composition 1, I can say that I did accomplish all of those goals.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. When most people think of a history class they imagine sitting in a dark lecture hall taking notes off a PowerPoint presentation, memorizing a few dates and people, repeating it on the test. Truly studying history, I learned, is more than memorization of a previously told story and accepting it as true. In this class I have learned history is about actively engaging the material, picking apart the details and nuances, creating and using timelines, finding deeper meaning in the material, asking questions, then looking again and digging deeper. It is not a passive study and not about memorization as I believed at the beginning of the semester. History is about asking questions and looking for answers, not just accepting what is already there, but…
