Review by: Angelica B. Villamil In the first Chapter of this novel the setting is during spring time where the Mole is having his annual spring cleaning in his little home. Suddenly, he hears something that calls him to go up above. As he saw the outside world, hearing the birds chirping and feel the sunshine, he realized how much time he was spending underground especially during the times when the weather was good. Looking at the surroundings he decided to explore, until he reached the hedge. There he saw several rabbits and blocked the way asking for money in order to let the Mole pass in in their private road. Since it is a children’s book, animal characters were used not just because they can easily catch the attention of the readers but also it can be more memorable and unique to human characters. In this first chapter, The River Bank, the story wanted to show to the readers the freedom and beauty that can be obtained in their lives. When Mole decided to go up and explore the life above makes feel the readers to use their freedom and experience everything that can help them grow and achieve the happiness in their lives. We should not just focus of what he have right now but also we have to do more, explore more and seek for more in order for us to become better persons. As we grow, we cannot just simply be transformed by only with the help of our own but also with the participation of other people. In the story, as Mole go farther and farther from his home he met new animals(Rat, on the first chapter) that became not just his good friends but also animals who made him understand the beauty of life and build their friendship. These people are allowing us to experience the things that surely we can get lessons from it whether it was a good or bad experience. One day he found a magic tollbooth on his room. When he gets in his toy car and goes through the tollbooth, he was transported to a magical place called the Lands Beyond. While he was exploring, he met a watchdog named Tock and joins on his journey. They went together to Dictionopolis and met a lot crazy attitudes, obsessed with words. Milo meets King Azaz and ordered him a mission to rescue two princesses, Rhyme and Reason who were imprisoned in the Castle in the air. The two of them leave Dictionopolis but with a new companion to be their guide, the Humbug. The three of them headed to Digitopolis to encourage the Mathemagician to set the princesses free. Until it was found out that the two brothers, King Azaz and Mathemagician sent of their sisters, Rhyme and Reaason out of the country when the brothers disagreed that letters and numbers are equally important. Since then, there were no Rhyme and Reason in their land. Then after a dinner in Dictionopolis with the king, dinner of full of words, Milo, Tock and Humbug were only left with the king. They have agreed that they will be going to their journey to save the two princesses but must first go to Mathemagician for the approval. On their way to see the Mathemagician they met different kinds of people and he realized that he must open his mind. They also met two people who are very interested in terrible sounds.
