“ Sometimes, the only way to ever find yourself is to get completely lost” Kelly Elmore. As our class began reading the novel The Wednesday Wars by Gary D Schmidt, in our class I started to recognize the moral of the story. Although the story appertained to about a young boy named Holling Hoodhood and his life throughout the academic year, I believe that if you read between the lines you will begin to see this book is about self discovery. Upon the introduction Holling was completely lost, it was as if he was stranded on an island and every time he tried to leave the waves crashed into him driving him back. He thought the populace was against him. Holling’s family did not believe what he told them, and eventually his friends turned their

The history of the United States of America has often remembered the country as being the world superpower or the world’s police force. That is to say that there have been only a few times the country has entered a conflict and lost. The large-scale wars such as The War of 1812, the U.S. Mexico War and both World Wars showed the military might of America. However there are a number of small wars that are less known and show the countries vulnerability. In his book The Savage Wars of Peace, Max Boot chronicles some of the lesser-known wars in American History, especially conflicts in which the United States has struggled.…

When I picture the Civil War, I picture people fighting in a field and Abraham Lincoln delivering triumphant speeches of freedom and emancipation. Not often do I think about the desperate human struggle for survival in POW camps, the brutal journey many took to escape slavery, or the hundreds of dead bodies that lay mutilated after brutal battles. In the graphic history Battle Lines, by Jonathan Fetter-Vorm and Ari Kelman, such realities and human experiences are visually portrayed. In order to tell these stories, the authors ground each chapter with an object and a story. By centering each chapter around an object, the authors place a great importance on each item and draw a connection between the experience of the individual and the experience…

The Legacy and Consequences of War In his coming-of-age novel, A Separate Peace, John Knowles tells the story of Gene Forrester and the struggles he faces – both internal and external. While Gene’s external struggles revolve mainly around world affairs at large; his internal struggles prove to be his greatest obstacle to overcome. The following excerpt demonstrates the struggle of consequences as being like a chain-reaction and how it destructively affects his best friend Phineas, “I took a step towards him… jounced the limb… his balance gone… and then he tumbled… broke through the branches below and hit the bank with a sickening unnatural thud… with unthinking sureness I moved… jumped into the river, every trace of my fear forgotten” (Knowles…

An important theme in The Wednesday Wars is if someone is kind to others they most likely will be kind to that person back. Events that support it is when Holling apologizes to Meryl Lee, when Danny gives up his mickey Mantle ball for Holling and when Mrs. Baker gets two Yankee players to come and play with Doug, Danny and Holling. Holling is very mad at Meryl Lee because she showed her father Hollings drawing and he used it. Then Holling realized how much Meryl Lee was sorry, so he was sorry to. Phineas begins to recognize the severity of the war and stops believing that it is fake, which is shown when Gene describes, “He brought his wide-set eyes up, his grin flashed and faded, and then he murmured, ‘Sure. There isn’t any war’ ” (Knowles 158). It appears that Finny is beginning to mature, when he suddenly doubts his theory that the war is fake and does not make comments about Leper being crazy. I infer that his sudden attitude change is due to the fact that he is realizing that he is crippled and cannot go on to do all of things that the other Devon boys can do, like fighting in the war, which causes his vivacious personality to dull a bit.…

I attended the screening of Joe’s War, a movie about a soldier that returns from Afghanistan and develops post-traumatic stress disorder. This movie was very powerful and heartfelt, but overall gave the audience a great understanding of the disorder. Learning it in class was very helpful in comprehending the basics of PTSD but watching the disorder progress throughout the film offered a more inside perspective. We watched the main character go through horrible circumstances with war and interpersonal relationships and eventually take his own life. As tragic as the last scene was it did, however, portray a deep message, it showed that gravity of this specific disorder.…

Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns narrates the lives of two Afghan women through three generations of war and conflict in Afghanistan. At first glance, the novel appears to be a appalling depiction of the injustice and cruelty towards women in Afghan society. However, Hosseini’s message may be far more hopeful than the novel’s grim atmosphere may suggest. A Thousand Splendid Suns depicts the conflict in Afghanistan through the lens of the country’s oppressed women. Yet, the novel actually breaks western stereotypes of Afghanistan by highlighting acts of resistance and bravery among its female characters.…
