Fatima is a student becoming a lawyer, and she thinks at this point in her life that school is more important than marriage. Fatima also has a boyfriend, but her mother does not agree with her that she should be with him. Khulsoom thinks this boyfriend of hers is not a real muslim since he is a converter to the religion. Another reason why Khulsoom thinks he is a bad idea is that he is black, and Khulsoom thinks Fatima should be with another muslim, with the same colored skin, so Fatima does not listen to her mother. Khulsoom feels ashamed that her daughter is changing cultures, and not becoming the daughter Khulsoom really wanted. The daughter who would find a nice muslim man to cook for; who has a stable job, and can make a family, so Khulsoom can have the grandchildren she always wanted. Fatima and Ghafur her youngest brother get into a little argument about Fatimas black boyfriend, which tells how her mother would react to it. Fatima tells Ghafur “ I’m sure Ami and Abu will be proud of having an I.M.B.E.S. in the family. You’ll get parental approval the day I bring home a Black Prince. Khulsoom is a hard working mother, that is trying the best as she can to help her daughter find the right path to becoming a great mother, who can cook for her family, and have children of her own. Khulsoom wants Fatima to have kids, so Khulsoom can become the grandmother she always wanted. Khulsoom also wants Fatima to teach her kids the pride of muslim culture, and tell them all about how to represent Muslims in the next generation. Khulsoom is feeling that Fatima is her last chance at keeping her family traditions, since her other two son’s do not want anything to do with the culture, and have moved into the American culture. Khulsoom just want Fatima to be happy, but I think if Khulsoom can just change some things around, and not push her daughter too hard, Fatima would end up listening since she still loves her mother very
