Parvana isn’t your usual eleven year old, she is surrounded by violence, oppression and poverty. She lives in Afghanistan, where the Taliban are under control. The Taliban banned women from coming out of houses and the only time they could come out was when they had a note from a male or when they were accompanied by one. At one point a Taliban soldier asked why Parvana was with her and he responded as follows “I need this girl to help me walk," her father would tell any Talib who asked, pointing to his leg. He had lost the lower part of his leg when the high school he was teaching in was bombed”(Ellis 6). He goes through a cycle of self doubt, an identity crisis and a state of denial. He becomes guilty for an extensive amount of time. This made Gene draw out the dark side of his character, which shows how mischievous he really can be. Which is what Gene thought Finny acted like, this causes to make Finny seem more pure. When Gene tries to explain to Finny that he might have made him fall, which is a him trying to grow up and being the better man, Finny became more angry and denied it. The following quote shows the denial of what Gene is telling Finny. “What do you mean, you caused it? his voice was as steady as his eyes… ‘Of course you didn't do it. You damn fool. Sit down, you damn fool.’”(Knowles 70). The two continue to argue until Finny tells him to leave, Gene thinks about the argument and starts to believe once again that it wasn't his fault. She was scared to death at the thought of her working disguised as a boy but she gained confidence and courage to do this. Plus she had her friend that would help her to get money which gave them in her eyes “all the money in the world”. When she heard her family were going to leave for Nooria's wedding she begged to stay because she kept thinking that her father might come back. “We can't leave Kabul! Parvana exclaimed. "What about Father? What will happen if he gets out of prison and we're not here? He won't know where to look for us!”(Ellis). After waiting for an extensive amount of time her father finally returned, after that they nursed him back to health until he was able to talk once again. What was suppose to be the end of the conflict only turned out to be the beginning to a whole series of books. The rest of her family were going to Nooria’s wedding but the Taliban happened to have gone there recently, so now Parvana and her father have to try and find their family to try and save them from whatever doom might be waiting for them over
