Essay On Tipping

Tipping your server after you have had your meal is something we are all accommodated with now, but why is that? Why people who visit a restaurant are the ones who determine what the employees make that night? Not all businesses practice this, when we go to a grocery store is there a box at the end of our shopping spree saying how much we want to pay the employee at the register, no there is not but why is this a phenomenon at restaurants. Tipping service workers at restaurants cause more problems than they solve. It causes pay disparity between servers and kitchen workers, and causes many service workers to live in poverty. This should be a form of gratitude not a way for people to make a living, tipping should be at most banned or at least not a form of base pay service workers should make minimum wage. This issue can turn into a social movement with the current issue of fast food workers receiving an increase in minimum wage why shouldn’t the workers in restaurants get the same. The people within this field are equally hard working, but receive none of the same pay. On average servers make about two dollars and fifteen cents an hour, but the legally the employer has to make up for the difference for the forty hours if the servers do not make enough through tips. In general there is no public movement in support of banning tipping, no forms currently protesting for this. There has been many articles and talks about this subject manner though talking about how tipping is a bad from of living. Many of the articles and speeches bring up the same information brought up in this paper as in how tipping is random, most service workers are in poverty, women consist a dominate portion of service workers, how in many cases restaurants most of the time never pay their workers the amount earned, and so
