Supermarket, a large form of the traditional grocery store, which is considered the best place to spend money on food are likely to have an adverse effect on customer’s health according to researchers. In the article “The Supermarket: Prime Real Estate,” Marion Nestle discusses how supermarkets design and control their features to make influences on shopping behaviors in order to gain more money from purchasers. Specifically, she argues buyer choices are being manipulated by food companies and the supermarket itself. Since their job is to do business, to sell more products, and to gain more profit, therefore, consumer’s health is not their first priority. As she puts it, “Perhaps, but they do everything to make the choice theirs, not yours. …show more content…
Nestle states that “ The stores create demand by putting some products where you cannot miss them.” Supermarket such as Winco Foods is typical example of how to set up their products with purpose. Bread and sweet cookies present in the front entrance and almost every intersections to attract sweet lover. The same thing with sugar drinks, it appears every fifty feet along the walkway. Alcohol drinks stand by side raw meats look like a suggestion for a barbecue party. Snacks and salty chips find in the first aisle which make it easier to get. So many people go to supermarket cannot avoid the temptation of these kind of foods. Of course, as a human nature, most of the time we pleased ourselves by choosing those bad food because it has good taste. We may be awared of this kind of foods, some of us may not. Some people might want to prepare a shopping list and stick with it, however, it does not have better results. These are some of the main reasons lead to the increase of obesity and diabetes. On the contrary, when we want to buy something on street market, mostly, we stick with the plan. For instance, I go to meat store when I want to buy meat, and of course, they do not provide alcohol drinks. Bread stores also do not provide sweet candy or sugar drinks. The distractions in street market are very little. As a consequence, I have higher chance to get away with junk foods.
