Nick Caraway who is the narrator of the story moves to New York City in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rents a house in West Egg, Long Island, which is where the Newly rich live. He also has connection to East Egg because Daisy Buchanan is his cousin. Jay Gatsby, Nick 's next door neighbor ,lives in a gothic looking mansion and he throws amazing parties every Saturday night. It is as if he is trying to impress someone. Nick isn 't like any of his neighbors. He went to Yale and as I said before has social connections in east egg. One night he drove out to East Egg to have dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom, who went to Yale with Nick. While he is there he is introduced to Jordan Baker who he likes immediately.

While he is there he see 's Jordan and while they are talking Gatsby pulls her away to tell her that he knew Daisy Buchanan in 1917 and fell madly in love with her, but didn 't have the means to support her. She told him she would wait for him, but when a more wealthy man showed up(Tom) she jumped at the opportunity. He will sit out on his dock at night just to stare at the green light at the end of her dock. He throws extravagant parties and lives the life he does to impress Daisy. Gatsby wants Nick to arrange a reunion for him and Daisy. But is scared of being rejected. One day Nick invited Daisy over to his house for tea. The plan was that while she was at his house Gatsby would show up and they would meet again. When the two ex lovers saw each other again they were obviously nervous, but quickly warmed up to one another. Jay Gatsby wasn 't always his name though. At 17 Gatsby changed his name from James Gatz to what it is today. This was the same time Gatsby met Dan Cody who soon after, became his mentor. One day in the summer Daisy and Tom went to a party of Gatsby 's. While Tom is "surprisingly" spending his time at the party chasing down women, Daisy and Gatsby sneak away and Nick who is the accomplis in the affair stands watch. After the Buchanan 's leave the party Gatsby tells Nick his plans to recapture the past. Gatsby truly believes that he can recapture the past
