Hanif Kureishi was born in 1954 to a Pakistani immigrant and an English woman. Due to the fact that his father was an immigrant he wrote many stories about the challenges people have being immigrants in a new country (Kureishi 1). In the story “My
Son the Fanatic” he shows the difficulties that a father, who has assimilated into western culture, and a son who is wanting to stick to his Muslim ways. In the story “My Son the Fanatic” I experienced confusion, sympathy, and humor. In the story “My Son the Fanatic” I experienced confusion multiple times in the beginning of the story. I started out being confused when in the story it says, “Surreptitiously, the father began going into his son 's bedroom. He would sit there for hours, rousing himself only to seek clues” (Kureishi “My Son the Fanatic” 98). From the very begging of the story Kureishi begins almost in the middle of a story. He starts his story with his father looking through his son’s room. The confusing part about the beginning is that there is no back-story to what is going on. He starts it as if things have been going on for a while with his son. Another thing that had me confused is when he says, “And so, for Ali, he had worked long hours and spent a lot of money paying for his education as an accountant. He had bought him good suits, all the books he required and a computer. And now the boy was throwing his possessions out” (99). I was confused by why he would just throw out all of his possessions.
