The child discloses the rarity of new toys, but purchases damaged Barbie dolls while on a trip to the flea market. The narrator acknowledges the flaws of the Barbies, but counters the stereotypical “perfect” woman standards by implying her gratefulness of possessing any dolls at all. Through this struggle, the girl learns to cope with her burdened lifestyle while also encountering gender roles and values. Specific Analysis: Dedé compares her decision to leave Jaimito and join the resistance force with her sisters to growing a plant in her garden in that it requires persistence, work, and passion. However, she later recounts that she forgot to plant the seeds for her plan, revealing that her plan will fail as a plant must be grown from a seed. The seed represents her character: at this point, Dedé does not have the courage or strength to go forward with her plan, and thus, her ideas for a new life have no base. Without the strength to follow her decision, Dedé’s decision lets her delude herself but ends up being ineffective as she is unable to stand up to Jaimito in time. The window in which she gazes at is the newfound freedom with which she is presented. While she looks as the window, Chopin inserts explicit language to describe Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts, “’ Free, free, free!’” Mrs. Mallard is no longer the woman “afflicted with a heart trouble,” but “a goddess of victory.” A situational irony comes to place when Mrs. Mallard does not react to her husband’s death in the way women are normally perceived to react. This irony reveals Mrs. Mallard’s desperation for freedom; she was content with her husband’s death if it meant regaining her freedom.…

When she writes about her new experiences in English, she is creating a new Eva who is completely different from the old Ewa all because the language is different. There are no longer “sentimental effusions of rejected love, eruptions of familial anger, or consoling broodings about death” in her writing because “English is not the language of such emotions” (121). Hoffman has lost the ability to express herself in the way she is familiar with in Polish and the emotions that she wants to write cannot be fully expressed in…
