In the Fiery Trial, Eric Foner argues that it is imperative for Abraham Lincoln to focus on slavery in the four boarder slave states that remain in the union. Foner deduces his argument from an editorial published on December 4th, 1861 in the New York Herald. The editorial provides an analysis of Mr. Lincoln’s message to Congress. It is interesting to note that this paper’s constituency is far from any boarder state conflict, yet of all the topics posed by Lincoln in his address to congress, they choose to focus on the contraband issue in boarder states. Thus, this provides evidence to support the notion that this is not just a regional issue but a national one too.…
When the B-24 bomber crashed into the sea on May 27, 1943, only three men survived: Louie, the tail gunner Francis “Mac” McNamara and the pilot Russell Allen “Phil” Phillips. During the next 46 days, they struggled to survive in two small, inflatable rafts while drifting across miles and miles of water. They had no food, since on the first night Mac ate all the chocolate that that was post to keep them alive for several days. I also had to battle the blistering heat of the day in the freezing cold of the night. Schools of sharks circled and attacked them often.…
In Marquis essay he argues that abortion is not right because killing the fetus is like killing an adult. Throughout the essay he questions that if it is right to kill a fetus it is right to kill living human. He then gives us the example of why it is wrong to kill a human. You are ruining future possibilities of that person and he then ties that with the reason of why it is wrong to kill a fetus.…

Throughout Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, there are some chapters that readers may feel lack information or any plot movement that pertains to the book in a direct way and would like to just pass through those chapters as quickly as possible because those particular chapters are thought of as filler chapters. If there is one thing a reader should take away from studying any Jane Austen piece is that she has a talent to formulate and place events in an appropriate order so that everything that happens throughout the novel fits perfectly together like a puzzle and that she has a rhyme and reason for the information she expresses throughout the book. A particular chapter that should be focused on is Chapter 10 in Volume One. On the first read-through, this chapter seems unimportant based on how it is primarily about writing letters and killing time until Jane Bennet has recovered from the…
Civil Rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr, in his letter, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” highlights his views as to why he believes demonstrations are needed towards justice for Blacks. King’s purpose is to refute and provide counterarguments regarding the urgency of changing segregation laws. He accomplishes this by arguing against the clergymen’s claims that opposed his views on why the Civil Rights Movement is needed and why he is calling for demonstrations involving direct action in Birmingham to continue. He adopts a civil and persistent tone in his letter to show how Blacks will stop at nothing to gain their basic freedoms and rights. In paragraphs thirteen and fourteen, King emphasizes the need for change in Birmingham by using diction, anaphora, and anecdotes to support his claims on the fight for justice.…

Throughout the early 1900’s, women were viewed by society as inferior to men. Those of the female sex were expected to cook, clean, and only speak when spoken to. The story’s central point focuses on the murder of John Wright committed by his wife Minnie as the Hales and the Peters investigate the crime scene. Despite the women finding valuable evidence substantiating the crime, their husbands viewed their discoveries as petty trifles that only women worry about.…
