She needed this passion towards her to live, and when Ethan was not showing any she started to fake illnesses very often. Zeena was a sick woman in need of help and we would see how worse her “illnesses” get each time Mattie and Ethan connected more. Zeena was asserted to be in control of the situations in her life and craved for someone to be at her side taking care of her needs every second. When Zeena did not get what she wanted, she found a way to get it or go against the ones around her. The readers saw how she got Ethan’s devotion at the end of the story when her health was suddenly regained and she was able to take care of her husband. Zeena probably knew her husband loved Mattie and attempted suicide to get away from her, but she did not care because as long as they all live in the same house; Zeena would be the one able to take care of Ethan and he no longer was capable of falling in love with the youth of Mattie Silver each day, since it no longer existed. Zeena Frome was a powerful character because she pushed for her way in life; she was not liked by many because of her sickness that only happened at convenient times, and how she forced for Ethan to continue loving her. However, she did prove to the readers of Ethan Frome that no matter how selfish or crazy a person can be, when someone comes into your life and takes your husband away from you, everyone can take a sickness,
