Analysis Of The Song Renegade

Music has the ability to elicit strong sensational feelings from the listener and often it comes from a unique blend of the song itself and the environment surrounding the listener. One song can leave your whole body covered in goose bumps with your hair sticking straight up; this is exactly what happened to me when I heard Renegade by Styx for the first time. Styx is an American rock band from Chicago that dominated the rock scene in the mid 1970’s and early 1980’s. Renegade was released in 1979 when Styx was comprised of five members; the song made its way to #16 on the billboard that year but it’s impact has stood the test of time and is felt just as strongly today. Styx is commonly known as a band that successfully blended the elements of pop rock with hard rock guitar play. The song Renegade is a first person narrative of an outlaw waiting to be hanged. Since 2002, the song Renegade has become a staple of Pittsburgh Steelers football, it is used in the fourth quarter right before the defense takes the field as a way to wake up the crowd and energize the entire stadium. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band -- they may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and country. For many, Lynyrd Skynyrd's redneck image tended to obscure the songwriting skills of their leader, Ronnie Van Zant. Throughout the band's early records, Van Zant demonstrated a knack for lyrical detail and a down-to-earth honesty that had more in common with country than rock & roll.…
