Most who witnessed the sitting president of these United States, sing the spiritual hymn Amazing Grace at Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston, SC, during his eulogy of falling spiritual warrior Rev. Clemmenta Picknecly would probably agree that it was overwhelming. It appeared to stir a feeling of connectively to all who sang along. Including, it is surmised, those around the world that identified with the words, reason and necessity for such a song at that moment in time. Kanye described women as gold diggers who take his money and do not really do anything in return, in his song “Gold Digger.” The Notorious B.I.G. used the world gold digger in his song, “Another,” referring to his girl taking his money and spending it with someone else. Kanye’s song depicts different instances of women being gold diggers. In the first verse he describes a woman that had four kids and expected Kanye to make them famous, even their friends, when they all go out to dinner he has to pay, and before he can get intimate with the woman, he is required to buy her lots of material things.…

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a song originally written and recorded by the Grunge band Nirvana in 1991 on their “Nevermind” album and is considered to be one of the most influential songs the band had written during their time. One year later, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was covered by singer-songwriter Tori Amos for her “Crucify” EP. While the cover may be extremely different from the original, there are still some elements that are similar among both versions. In contrast, both Nirvana and Amos play different styles of music which would change how the song is viewed by their respective audiences. Vision as a Song There are few conversations that make people as uncomfortable as talking about race and racial injustice. This scene in Melvin Van Peeble’s Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971) brings the viewer to the verge of walking away during these couple minutes, and it is definitely not the dialogue or the narrative that takes us there. This scene intentionally breaks conventional editing and filming practices to recreate the sense of mayhem and confusion that the black community feels on a regular basis. Paired with a jazz song with random riffs, the viewer hopes that visually there will be some harmony found anywhere in the montage, however the composition will not allow it.…

The song “Best of You” by Foo Fighters explicitly describes a situation between two people who had a really close relationship and one experienced mistreatment and abuse physically or mentally. That’s one way the lyrics of this song could be translated, but the idea expressed in this song, I think, is much bigger than that. The relationship described is a metaphor for anything that constrains an individual in life. The song was written with the purpose of self-help from problems ranging from relationship problems to mental sicknesses such as depression, not just for relationship problems. One way you can see evidence that this song is not just a song about a heartbreak relationship, but a song written specifically to motivate individuals to…
