In “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, the central idea of the story is war changes people. War changes people because at the beginning of the story “he finished the sandwich taking a flask of whiskey from his pocket”(O’Flaherty 1). When a person is in the military using a high powered weapon for example; sniper, machine gun,assault rifle, etc. You would expect that person to be 100% sober and not under the influence of anything.To show how war changes people at the end, the sniper had shot someone from the other side of the war that was not on the Republic of Dublin [Ireland] it was his brother. “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face”(O’Flaherty 3).
