To be honest, Judge Pillier gave most of the clues that Edmond was still alive. It was strange that Judge Pillier was picking Octavie up and didn't even say a word about the lost of his son. What was a deal breaker was when Judge Pillier said to Octavie "To remove that veil which you wear. It seems out of harmony, someway, with the promise of the day." Although it is true that the priest found the gold locket on a dead young man and didn't know what Edmond looked like, it was wrong for the priest not to give a detailed description on how the young man looked. Also, Octavie could've still asked to see the body just to make sure it was Edmond.
"The Locket," was a very interesting short story but the ending was not surprising at all. There were to many things that gave away that he wasn't dead. For example When Judge Piller seemed okay about his son dying. Also what really gave it away was when Judge Piller said, "That for once relent and give us back our dead."
