In the short story. Désiree’s Baby, the couple go on their own separate ways because of the baby’s skin color. If the couple was in love in the beginning of the relationship, then they would have not gone to their separate roads because love is not only about looks and they could have attempted to have another child with lighter skin color. The couple was not in love because they would have never separated from each other and stayed together and most of all, looks is not the only thing that should be focused on. Truly the couple must have not been completely in love or else they would have never had the child to mislead the relationship. A child, more of a baby, should not have the blame of a broken relationship. A broken relationship should be about uncorrectable problems like the child dies out of an incurable disease or the child fell and broke its neck. Interracial couples who fought to remain together did face consequences such as higher taxes and be treated in “a socially unacceptable manner.” Meaning that discouragement between interracial couples was a huge involvement back in the 1800s because people then saw it as a bad thing.
