The United States seems to have a fascination with murders and those that commit them. Everywhere we look there is a news report about some tragic event or a documentary coming out about a grotesque murder/attack and we gobble it up. We are enthralled with how these people managed to get away with all this harm, sometimes with no one ever noticing. What is even more terrifying, is that most of these people have families that live in blissful ignorance about their loved one’s torturous acts. There are some people that takes these killings as gospel, they idealize the perpetrators and want to one up them, so much so that they emulate their crimes. For that reason, the media should remain impartial and not perpetuate images, background …show more content…
Everyone knows at the very least the basic information on this person, because he was on every news outlet possible. His name will be forever cemented in our history. His action will be known to have happened because of mental Illness, however there is something that many don’t know and that is that, “Lanza's online activity, discovered after the 2012 attack, suggested he was "obsessed" with mass shootings and those who perpetrated them, and viewed the field as competitors, Lankford said., [..] Lanza went on the declare that when a mass shooter's motives are a "mystery," the case gets more attention (Los Angeles Times).” This is the reason that Lanza destroyed his computer before going and committing his atrocious acts; he wanted his crime be remembered in infamy. He and many like him have stated that Harris and Klebold as inspiration for their crimes. Mass shooters often openly admire the handiwork of those who have killed before them. Yes, I do think that Lanza acted with mens rea. Even though Adam Lanza suffered from a mental illness that’s not associated with violence. Lanza had a plan in mind to kill his mother and go on a rampage to kill 27 people at an Elementary school. If he didn’t have the knowledge of what he was doing that he would not have killed his mother after they came back from out of town, he would have killed her when they out of town. That’s why I believe that this massacre was planned and acted upon.…

There are many theories that go along with just one crime. As anyone can see the Sandy Hook shooting was a horrible tragedy, but there were few positive things that came out of it. This one incident shows that crime is a much more intricate process than just simply one person committing an act that goes against the social norm. Adam Lanza had a lot of things going on his life that led him to actually committing the crime.…

Unfortunately this mental image is pretty much the norm. Between the media and the movies, when one thinks of a mad man they think of a mentally ill person swaying a gun left to right uncontrollably while pacing back and forth. The point of Toms article is to educate that this is not always the case, and to ask people to stop assuming every murderer must be mentally ill. By doing so the people who are mentally ill and need help have a huge stigma put on them. People are less likely to care about the mentally ill when they associate them with mass murders.…

Murder is one norm in our society that dates back to the ten commandments. The extremely negative reactions to mass killings reinforce the belief that murder is wrong. The general consensus is that the acts of serial killers are disgusting. They rebel against the norm in such an extreme manner that they have been described as barely human, although their psychology suggests they have no feelings and therefore cannot feel sympathy for others.…
