Analysis Of The Poem ' Twenty One Pilots '

Superior Essays
Twenty One Pilots is a two piece band that incorporates musical techniques from all genres to form their own sound. Their newest album, titled Blurryface, is a menagerie of songs that some may hate and others will love. According to Billboard Magazine, this album is “a hot mess (in a good way)” (Kamps 1). When I first heard the album, I thought that it was the one that was going to make Twenty One Pilots gain more fame. After a few listens, I discovered that many of the songs share similar theme of someone crying for help.

“Heavydirtysoul” is a great example of Tyler Joseph’s experimentation with mixing genres of music. This song starts the theme of a cry for help by portraying a person’s attempts to get help getting away from what is ruining their life by asking “Can you save my heavy, dirty soul for me?” The song also has the lyrics “Death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit” which explains that Joseph keeps running from death, but we all know that eventually the dog will catch the rabbit.

In “Stressed Out”, Joseph doesn’t really mix genres in the timbre of the lyrics or the instrumentals. This song introduces Blurryface to this album’s underlying story. Blurryface is a character who embodies a person’s bad side. He manifests the self-loathing, fear, insecurities and doubts of a person. In the song, Joseph sings “I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink, but now I’m insecure and I care what people think,” This portrays a person growing up with anxiety

Perfume Genius’s track “Hood” is a song of intense complexity, as well as beautiful, simple tragedy. Perfume Genius, the stage name of Mike Hadreas, is a one-man solo artist, and “Hood” is the ninth song on a twelve track album called Put Your Back N 2 It, released in 2012. Hadreas is openly gay, and sexuality plays a large part in many of his works, “Hood” being a prime example, although not the central focus of the song. With various interpretations and subjective relatability, the true meaning of “Hood” is still able to shine through, especially with Hadreas’s use of rhetorical devices and artistic decisions that enhance the audience experience. Rhetorical devices are used throughout the song and the video in order to help Hadreas get his…

Juxtaposition plays a huge part in the song as it places 2 completely opposite opinions side by side. P.F Slogan, using this feature, helps create a clear point of view in the listener’s head, showing how ridiculous certain decisions were. In the first verse he juxtaposes, “You’re old enough to kill” with “but not for voting” and ‘you don’t believe in war” with “then what’s that gun your totin.” Another example of juxtaposition in the song is “Hate you next door neighbour” with “but don’t forget to say grace” (4th Verse/Bridge). Metaphors such as “the world in a grave” (2nd verse) and “even the Jordan River has bodies floatin” (1st verse) causes the listener consider the implications this song was trying to display, a strong but balanced sense of fear, courage and indifference .…

“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…

This is an ardent, smooth album where Mayer elegantly combines his passion for rhythm and blues with his sincere knack for inventing unforgettable melodies and strongly put-together songs. Through this album, Mayer explores a completely new direction with his music. Mayer moves his music in Continuum to a more laid back style as opposed to his other albums/songs in which he shows a far stricter mood.…

This song talks about the speaker driving up to Oakland to see his girlfriend and can’t wait to get away from all the horrors of where he is living only to be met with new problems. This is similar to the fact that in the book Mayella is trying to get away from the horrors of kissing a black man by lying and saying that he raped her, trying to get him killed. Yet, she doesn’t know about the problems that can erupt from having an innocent man killed. The tone of both the book and the song is tense. You feel tense and a bit excited in the song when the speaker is talking about the problems he faces when he gets to his girlfriend.…
