The novel, The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, was written in 1850 is is a romance novel written in the historical setting of Massachusetts Bay colony in 1642. Through an examination of the natural environment of the Scarlett Letter, one can see that it is a reflection of the situation, whether good or bad, which is important because it allows us to see and understand the emotional state of a person, such as the main characters of the story. The sun is an integral part of life on Earth. Without it, humans would not receive a vital vitamin and plants would die. The sun, in The Scarlett Letter, is important because it is repeatedly used to show the emotions that Hester goes through in the book. Hawthorne indicates Hester’s mood after having suffered the public shaming and exited the prison to be shame for the sunshine shone “for no other purpose than to reveal the scarlet letter on her breast page” (31). The sun shows Hester’s shame of the scarlet “A”, not necessarily because of the act that she committed, but rather because it is a reminder of her no longer being an accepted member of the strict society that was her life. The sun highlights that shameful symbol, pointing it out to her and to everyone else. Due to that shame, she became an outcast.
