As October is the month of remembrance, one can only make sure to make a personal connection by first knowing what the word means. Remembrance means to account what happened in the past as well as embracing the past for it shapes their lives in present. Connections start to be made from people who read the ancient and classical books through analyzing them and finding a theme that fit within human values. As one spends their time reading one of the most ancient and best epic poems of all time titled The Odyssey by Homer, the theme of remembrance not only recounts the lives of the Ancient Greeks, but also the history of Ancient Greece as a whole. Odysseus, as well as the other Achaeans, has spent much of their time away from their families and homes due to the Trojan War. Although, Odysseus has not only thought of the tough hardships faced during the war and missing his family, he remembers the people that he had fought with and stood alongside him. Going into the text of The Odyssey, three examples of remembrance can be found in the book titled, The Red Haired King and His Lady, where Menelaus and Helen tell Telemachus about the Trojan War and his father Odysseus; in the book titled, The Song of the Harper, where a minstrel plays the story of the perils and glory of the Trojan War; and lastly, in the book titled, The Beggar at the Manor, where Odysseus and a dying dog reunite after twenty …show more content…
As the three examples came from the moment when Menelaus described Odysseus through remembering about the Trojan War, when Odysseus cried in reaction to the minstrel’s song of the Trojan War and the men-Odysseus’ friends and companions-that have died, and when Odysseus finally reunites with a hound he trained twenty-years ago, remembrance is not only seen to be minor thoughts of not to forget something and what to bring to a festivity, it is more serious per se and that it has to do with looking at the past to shape the present and to embrace all events of life.
