Seigfried Sassoon: The Critic of War While Seigfried Sassoon was fighting on the Battlefield, he noticed that many people had the wrong image of war in their heads. He did not see the joy or pleasure in fighting and killing people to show pride for his country. All he got from the war was discomfort, but with his personal experience in the war he was able to create many poems to show what war was, and to show the people back home that it was nothing to joke about. With his poems, readers are able to know what war was like and give the readers a new point of view on the war. The theme of the poem would be peace, sacrifice and freedom, due to the soldiers fighting for the freedom of their country but also sacrifice themselves for their country and friends within the war. Sassoon expresses the unwillingness of leaving each other in line 9 shows how much the group of friends wanted to stay together but had to sacrifice their friendship to help out the country and win the war. Sassoon joined the war to help out his country and that’s why this first poem about war, is not anti-war because at the time he wrote this he believed that fighting for his country was the best thing he could do. The one metaphor within the poem is line eight “Time’s but a golden wind that shakes the grass” (8). This is a very deep metaphor and could differ opinions between each person who reads it. Imagery is also used in lines one, five, and eight. “The anguish of the earth absolves our eyes” (1). The imagery used shows how the pain of the looking at the Earth clears the guilt from his eyes. The mood of the poem is very tense and reproachful as throughout the poem, the soldiers do not want to leave each other but then statements said throughout the poem can be taking very different ways.
