D.H. Lawrence’s poem the, “Piano” allows readers to look into the author’s life sharing his memories from his childhood. Some people who read this poem will think that the poem is mainly about the author underneath the piano as his mother sings and plays beautiful music. And you would be right to think that because that is what the poem “Piano” is about. But there is so much more within this poem besides that obvious factor. Behind the scenes of the poem is the bonding of a mother and her son through an activity that they both enjoy and look forward to doing. It is their way of connecting and growing closer together which in return strengthens their relationship between each other. In the beginning of the poem, “Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me” (1). This line sets the mood of the poem by using words that will allow readers to create an image in their mind of a woman singing in an establishment.
But then following into the next line of the poem, Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see A child sitting under the piano, in the bosom of the tingling strings And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings. (2-4). A flashback occurs in this three lines due to the author hearing the woman singing her lovely tune. The child underneath the piano the reader can grasp that it’s the author when he was a kid. He probably remembers this memory because perhaps the woman singing in the first line is singing a…
