Mrs. Reece Laughs Poem Analysis

In this poem “Mrs. Reece Laughs” there are many themes, symbols and images that are important to the plot. Many of these themes, symbols, and images reflect into my graffiti poem and show the poems meaning. First of all, the themes in the poem are “laughter grows deeper as time passes by” which is shown by Mrs. Reece’s laugh growing in many ways, “the ability some people have of an extraordinarily laughter” is one of the themes because it represent how Mrs. Reece has a laughter that is different from other people, and “many people don’t realize the importance of laughing” is another because Mrs. Reece can be seen laughing which symbolize her ability to laugh with ease and laughter more unnatural to her which shows that she doesn’t accept laughter …show more content…
Another thing it could show is the hair being the leaves on the tree and the elm tree, her body. The last symbol I noticed in the poem was the series of steps it takes to reach the final stage of laughing, these steps symbolize the type of person she is and how her laugh is. These are the symbols that are present in the poem “Mrs. Reece Laughs”. Last of all, the images that are part of the story help enhance the poem for the reader. Some examples of the poetry are “it germinates, it spreads, dimple by dimple”- the reader can see her face turn into a smile and her dimples appear, “clusters of subterranean chuckles rise”- she can be seen laughing really hard, “and presently the circles of her eyes”- which shows her closing her eyes because she is laughing too hard, “as a great elm with all its mounds of leaves”- shows the women heaving herself up and breathing hard, “in one wild crow, a lifting of huge hands,”- shows her hands covering her face so she does not act disrespectful, “in scarlet ridge and furrow” is a line in which the women turns red after laughing too hard, and finally the line “a hanging head, a feeble had that flaps” that can make the reader visualize her head either looking down or looking …show more content…
These symbols were included of a willow tree that was made to find into the background through a technique called opacity is used, the girls face laughing hard with her head up, her eyes closed and her hands trying to hold herself. There are also little clips of her face showing different portions of her face during the time she laughs. Furthermore, the images that are used in my work from the poem her face and the different visuals of portions of her face, her picture shows are laughing, her eyes are closed tight, there is a faded elm tree, her hands hold herself, the picture has a pink or scarlet tinge to it, and her head looks up. These are the images that are used in my graffiti work. Moreover, other touches I added to my artwork to make it look like it does are effects that change the actual picture. To start my photo editing I made my picture go black and white, and added a monochrome touch. Then I added a red color to the picture with hints of blue and green. This makes the picture have a pink and coral tinge. Also, I used an effect to separate the picture into little boxes and added a “wave” touch to it because of the line “a sudden wave that breaks and dies in breaking”. Afterwards I added a willow tree on top of the picture and used the layers button to change its opacity, making it fade into the first

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

I have been writing some assignments in which I had to include poetry, logos, pathos, ethos and many more during this school year. It has taught me how to use each one of them in different ways. During this school year I read a poem which is written by Emily Dickinson and it taught me how poetry is written and it also carries a meaning or an hidden message, also an expression or thought that the person feels. For example, in one of her poems “hope” she uses an example of a bird or a angel to express her thought or feelings and how it can destroy you in a quick instant, but it can also help without expecting anything from you.…

The poet positively embraces her bi-cultural heritage, perceiving the dual perspectives of her parentage as a source of enrichment that drew her closer to other cultures. She feels very close to Mexican culture because of the sense of otherness that Mexicans feel in the United States; a sense of otherness that she can identify with. In an interview with Phoebe Davidson, she explains her attachment to other cultures, and particularly Latin American culture: "It doesn’t matter it isn’t my culture, I’ve always felt that any little bit of other in our lives …gives much more than it takes away" (1998,162). Many Arab-American women have sought spaces of empowerment and visibility through alliances and coalition-building with other minorities. For…

These resemblances really show the way beauty and grace can go away without care and love. One other symbol mentioned in the story was the strand of grey hair. The strand of hair is a reminder of the love she lost. The strand of hair also reveals how she never decided to bury her husband who had died because just like when her father died, she could not accept the fact that the ones she truly loved were actually gone. The narrator foreshadows the discovery of the long strand of hair on the pillow when he describes the changes that Emily goes through as she ages.…

Most of today’s society has had an experience like the character in Carolyn Kizer’s poem “Bitch”, by meeting an ex-significant lover/partner when visiting a local place. The awkward first moment while making eye contact with one another just like a past experience, often creates a challenge about the appropriate way to act. Especially, if the past experiences was not pleasant and/or was full of male dominance. Carolyn Kizer shows this in her poem through the theme, which is, you should never chase after something that was never really yours to begin with and is more harmful than rewarding. Beginning with the title, “Bitch”, most readers will associate this word to have two possible meanings.…

The language in this poem contributes to how powerful this poem is. Imagery is one of the most powerful factor witnessed in this poem, this is because the author made such wonderful use of it.
