She defines herself speaking different types of English in a particular place. She talks in a “Broken English” with her mother to better communicate with her, while she speaks extremely fluent English outside the home. She often picks up call for her mother and impersonate her mother 's voice because most of the times her mother gets ignored by the people. Tan describes her mother as Stockbroker in the New York whiles impersonating her mother 's voice. It basically appeals to the logos in the story because although her mother has a broken English, she is a stockbroker. She also talks about how the mother tongue has shaped her life. She said, “That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world.” Many people have their own style of speaking, and expressing things. When Tan speaks in a Broken English, most of her colleagues or other people do not tend to understand. In the beginning of the story, she describes herself, “I am not a scholar of English or literature [...] I am a writer. And by that definition, I am someone who has always loved language”(Tan). By stating her educational background, she appeals to ethics by persuading people that she is an eloquent speaker and writer.
