I feel the theme of “Mid-Term Break” , is a poem about the emotional changes families go through with the untimely death of a family member.
When you first read the title you get the impression that the poem is going to be about leave school for rest and relaxation purposes. You quickly find out that is far from what the poem is about. In the poem the author start by mentioning the young man sitting in sick bay, “counting bells knelling classes to close”(72). The young boy has been placed in a area of segregation and isolation so long that he start to count the number bells (Knelling) ring ending classes. Here the men attempted to comfort the boy who was obvious use initiating greeting. The boy was said to be embarrassed thus giving a mental picture of a group of emotional people. The author wants the readers to get the mental picture of a group of people who have been affected by a tragic event. The mentioning the young boy being away at school gives the impression that the boy is rarely home and was unable to spend time with his love ones. He provide problem the most graphic picture of all here. He writes, “Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple, He lays in the four foot box as in his cot. “No gaudy scars, the bumper knocking him clear”(73). The author want the reader to visualize a face free of scars that appear more asleep than dead. To end the poem the author expression of grief the death of someone so close and so young, the writer enduring memory, thinking of the last moment when the severity of the situation hits him. “A four foot box, a foot for every year”(73). Here the reader gets a broader picture of the emotions expressed in this poem. The person who has pass is a young 4 year old who hasn’t live long enough to experience
