This poem is about the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, where Kinnell was at New York City as a professor. In this part of the poem, Kinnell compares eating the blackberries to different words such as “strenghths” and “squinched” (Kinnell, Blackberry Eating. ) Using nature in his poetry shows the amount of love that Kinnell has for nature and an ability to use nature in his writing. He shows an amount of love and care in his writing similar to humans and how they love and care for one another. Additionally, Galway Kinnell is able to use nature to show characteristics of humans by using human beings in his writing.
