Pumpkins are fruit that bloom in late autumn, but they are harvested before winter arrives. The speaker states “the pumpkins, still in the fields” (line 4); to show that everything and everybody were unprepared for the climate change. Even though the speaker notices these pumpkins do not belong in the snow, he finds a way to elegantly describe the pumpkins left in the field. Instead of depicting a melancholy scene of ripe pumpkins being ravaged, the speaker is able to make these pumpkins seem mysterious. A metaphor shows the comparison of pumpkins to planets. The pumpkins are described as “planets/ shrouded by clouds” (lines 4-5). In lines four and five the speaker announces, “The Weber wears a dunce cap/ and sits in the corner by the garage”(line 6-7). This divulges to the reader that the speaker does not use the grill, because it is in the corner of a garage with a cover on it. Also, it is impractical to have the grill out during the winter because grilling is an activity that ordinarily occurs during the summer. If the speaker needed to use the grill, it would be in an easy assessable place. Comparing the cover to a dunce cap is humorous because the grill can not be dumbfounded. This shows the speaker is trying to illuminate the mood on this snowy cold day. The comparison also shows the frivolousness of the grill during the winter.
