People around the world are suffering every day, but these people still have hope in order to be motivated to keep living. Hope is the belief that positive outcomes will eventually happen in a person’s life. Many people living in unimaginably horrible situations cling onto the hope that one day the suffering will end. Without hope people living in adversity have nothing. Kathleen McCarty 's poem, "The World We Live In", portrays the hardships that people around the world manage and suggests how the wealthy can make the world a better place by helping people living in poverty. Barry portrays imagery when depicting the state of hopelessness. The narrator states, “Outside, the rain continued to hammer away at our dismal little world, and the sky had shucked the last of its evening grey to take on an intense purplish tone that was ominous" (Barry 31). Barry shows the reader what the world looks like in the eyes of the narrator. Rain is an element that is often associated with sadness and stating that his world is small is showing the reader that the narrator thinks of himself as insignificant. Colours can also show what the author feels as grey and purple are dark and plain colours that add to the author’s feeling of hopelessness. Although, the narrator realizes that the world is not against him as he states, "The world opened its grim beyonds and I realized that, at forty one, one must learn the rigours of acceptance" (Barry 44). The narrator accepts the situation he is in and realizes that he must stop loathing his life and learn to hope for the best. The author shows that the narrator’s narrow view of his world is opened and therefore can see the positives aspects of life. This allows the narrator to accept his situation and to move on with his life. Hope allows people to be optimistic to live life with acceptance and to be grateful for what one
