Throughout the novel, Chua’s authoritarian parenting styles had many people questioning their parenting style. Did I raise my kids the wrong way? At first I would always have to fight with them because my classes would take place during Sunday’ 12 to 1 in the afternoon. As a typically Chicago sports fan, the Chicago Bears would usually play in this time slot. Also, this was in 2005, when the Chicago Bears went to the Superbowl. So every week on Sunday, I would have to go to the temple and learn how to read Gujarati, and miss out on the games. As this happened for almost two years, soon I was getting infuriated. I would argue with my parents the class is useless, and nobody in the United States will make me read in Gujarati. My argument came out to be unsuccessful, and my parents kept on forcing me to go to class. Now, after ten years later, I can say thank you to my parents for forcing me to go to class every week. As it turns out, learning Gujarati not only helped me speak in my religious conference, but also to become a translator for many of my peers. Additionally, learning the language helped me communicate with my grandparents, and more of the older generations.
Likewise, Chua forced her children to learn about Mandarin Chinese. In these scenarios, being authoritarian parents is good because the parents know what is best for their children. If parents are permissive the children will have the freedom of doing whatever they want. However, at a young age freedom is not good because children are unable to differentiate between what is wrong and right. Chua was right, of doing whatever she did to her children, however, there were some techniques that were

Based on her Chinese parenting ways and the examples of what not to do while parenting on psychologytoday.com, some would clearly say that Chua is pushing her kids too hard in order to be successful. They say that there are “ineffective ways of communicating that lead to noncompliance and power struggles, or damage self-esteem.” Some of the “ineffective ways” that they later describe include some of the methods that Chinese parenting includes. The only problem with that is that Chinese-raised children learn how to overcome that low self-esteem and learn from what they are being put down…

Elizabeth Kolbert summarizes an excerpt from a book titled “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” written by Amy Chua. The excerpt was assigned to her children in school, stating that the children’s teacher had been given the article from a friend who received it via a long-shared chain of emails. Kolbert goes over the main essential parts of the essay while maintaining a non-biased opinion of the article. Kolbert uses many of Chua’s more controversial points to invoke thinking in the reader, often bringing up criticism on those comments. Kolbert also lists the many places that the full book has been featured.…

Chua’s standpoint is to hound the child until, in her case she, learns something and perfects it whether it is what the child wants or not. On the other hand, Rosin’s approach is more relaxed and she lets her child chose what he or she wants to do. In my opinion I think it should be a mixture of both. Parenting should teach a child how to grow up being respectful, disciplined, and hard-working.…

For example, when he touches on how there is no difference in comparison of her style of parenting and America’s, he claims, “Furthermore (and this Chua doesn’t appreciate), she is not really rebelling against American-style parenting; she is the logical extension of prevailing elites practices”(58). This negation opens our eyes, and forces us to realize that she is no better because her kids do well in school, but that it is possible for everyone to have the same outcome. In addition he declares, “ She does everything over-pressuring upper-middle-class parents are doing. She’s just hardcore”(58). By nullifying her sense of high position, it puts her at the same level of a parent with wealth, because she is not the only one pressuring their kids to do well.…

“Indian Education” by Sherman Alexie was a short story that really captures whomever reads it. The structure of the short story is quite a unique one. I had never seen a story told this way, which is one of the reasons it compelled me to read it. It’s told as episodes, from first grade all the way to postscript: class reunion. Each episode further tells the reader about the narrator’s Indian background and how each important event in life and in his education that happened that year, shaped his identity.…

Many studies on family and race, specifically Asians prove that people’s lives are structured in a certain way and have a clear impact on their life chances. Although these statements are true and relatable on a personal level, some of these facts are beginning to wane away. An example of this would be a quote from Yen-Chun Cheryl Chen and Jui-Chung Allen Li “the father-son axis is fundamental to the family relations in East Asian societies,” (62) this must have been true for past generations but a lot of time has passed since then, which renders this statement false. On the other hand, a statement that still seems relevant comes from Kimberly Goyette and Yu Xie “distinct Asian American groups have higher educational expectations than do…

Before this summer study-travel seminar, in all honesty, I had never read any of the writings of Asheville native author, Thomas Wolfe. We were assigned an assortment of different works such as story: “The Child by Tiger” and excerpt from novel, Look Homeward, Angel “The Return of the Prodigal”. I am happy that I was introduced to this author, for I found that I thoroughly enjoy Wolf’s writing style, with his descriptive word choice, vivid imagery and characterization. Today we had the opportunity to visit the boarding house right in downtown Asheville, where the author himself spent his childhood during the start of the nineteenth century. We began the tour with an informative video depicting his life history, including his siblings’ tragic deaths, affairs with married women, rise to fame in the world of literature, and concluding with his untimely death at the age of thirty eight due to Tuberculosis.…

Chua shows us so many great examples of how to get your kids to practice and actually learn any material and it all starts with how you raise a child if you let them slack off and accept too many failures from them at one point they 'll see a pattern and use it to their advantage. Then the child and parent bond is lost and it all goes downhill. But if you teach them from an early age that education is truly the key to great and successful life then that 's all they will want. Also another great point Chua makes is on how “Chinese Parents” believe that if their child has done poorly or failed a course it is the child 's fault for not working hard enough and putting enough hours and dedication into the subject. Unlike “Western Parents” that if they see their child struggling or not doing so well they will automatically blame another thing other than their child such as the subject or even teachers or the whole system the school is under.…

An Effective Approaches to Parenting. There are many different cultures in the world, and every culture has its own view about parenting.
