The poem begins by stating that a girl just like any other is born just like any other with dolls, lipstick and cooking equipment. She already from birth she is molded into stereotypical female bound by society. “Then in the magic of puberty, a classmate said/ you have a big fat nose and fat legs.” (Lines 5 & 6). First of all as a girl we are bombarded with these images of models in magazines, which we as women are supposed to look like. So if you don’t look like the women in these magazines you are already labeled as different. I too was bullied almost this same way, it hurt when my peers would say things like this and it made eventually depressed. The poem goes on to explain what a bright future this girl by saying “she was healthy, tested intelligent,”(7). But all “everyone saw [was] a fat nose on thick legs.”(11). This line is one of the ones that made me the angriest simply because although she was healthy and intelligent all people saw was her nose and legs. Because nowadays people are blind to what bullying really does to a person, it causes suicide and depression. We are presented with images and toys from young ages that are vastly different from ourselves. The problem is this, even from a young age we are expected to play these roles and to be beautiful. Not everyone is the same nor should they be expected to be. Everyone all over have experienced some sort of bullying in their life that has impacted them negatively for maybe months or years. Because of their nose, feet, legs, arms, face, and hands, this judgment may never stop. Bullying may never cease in schools, it is sad but true. But us as individuals can make a stand just by being kinder to one another.
