April Midnight Poem Analysis

The poem, “April Midnight” by Arthur Symons, is the poem of LOVE. The poet uses repetition such as parallelism, diction, and a simple rhyme scheme to portray romantic love, the spring season, nature, social commentaries, and urban life. By analyzing the word choice and the simplicity of the rhyme scheme’s structure, it becomes the poem’s purpose is to revolve around love. The structure of the poem is most important part of this poem because it takes the reader through different levels in relationship. The structure works like a stairway showing the growth of love in steps. The poet must be in deep love and thinking about her while writing the poem because the poem sounds cool, calm, and loving. The title of the poem, “April Midnight” itself gives the hint that the poem is about love. There is still incredible feeling, but it is also doused with something different. The first and second lines, “Cool to the wind blows, fresh in our faces, / Cleansing, entrancing,” (9-10) are the set up for the change of tone. They are still full of wonderful imagery, but the words cleansing and entrancing hint that the wind and their love does more than just caress their bare skin in the night. It illustrates what the men and the women does for their living, “After the heat and the fumes and the footlights, / Where you dance and I watch your dancing” (11-12). The girl is some sort of dancer, and the men watches her perform.
