The Doll House Research Paper The play “The Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen was written in the late 1800’s in Europe. This drama tells a story of one woman’s struggle in society when trying to help her family. Throughout the play there were many different aspects of the dilemma of social status and serious decision making, but with these choices comes unforeseeable consequences. In this play we see how society has altered the decisions that Nora, Torvald and Krogstad make to better help themselves. Back in the Victorian era when “The Doll House” was written according to “the wife would stay home and take care of the children.” So women were not capable of having a job back then because society frowned upon it. In the play Nora would stay at home and care for the children and her husband because it was her duty. But when her husband became ill, he could no longer work. That meant that there was no income coming to the house so they would soon go into bankruptcy. Until Nora said “I even hinted that he might raise a loan. That nearly made him angry, Christine. He said I was thoughtless, and that it was his duty as my husband not to indulge me in my whims and caprices--as I believe he called them. Very well, I thought, you must be saved--and that was how I came to devise a way out of the difficulty”.
