Analysis Of The Perilous Fight By Sean Gregory

Racial inequality is not a despicable act that has been growing over the course of a few months; it is simply an injustice, but racial brutality is an act against a human being’s natural right of safety, especially in a country that claims not only freedom but acceptance and safety over oneself without discrimination held unrightfully against any American. To further express this idea, the article The Perilous Fight written by Sean Gregory describes racial issues regarding African Americans, especially acts of ruthlessness against black male individuals along with the actions athletes are taking to make this issue known. With the increasing severity of this expanding matter shown not only through violence but socially as well, professional …show more content…
It has become a controversial topic amongst Americans and has derived many negative reactions from the public; just like many of its citizens, the United States’ president, Donald Trump, has regarded the act of kneeling during the national anthem a personal attack to the country and even suggested he (Kaepernick) can “find another country to call home.” Countless people have enforced similar actions, but his stand against racial injustice isn’t unnationalistic like many Americans believe it to be. The article mentions that Kaepernick, like many of the athletes participating in this protest, is showing his appreciation for the United States by exercising his freedom of speech to speak against something that is morally wrong. It can be agreed that the purpose of kneeling is not meant to be taken as a personal attack against our nation, but more so to widely express and rise against the violation of the citizens’ humane …show more content…
Individuals of any race, skin color, or ethnicity resent the lack of acceptance and maybe even safety, which is why athletes of all sports have taken the opportunity of uniting against these concerns. Not only commonly known and supported football athletes have come together to protest in favor of spreading the truth about racial violence, but also athletes from many sports like soccer and even tennis. The article mentions many individuals part of other sports who have been fighting in favor of racial equality like Billie Jean King, a famous tennis player, and Megan Rapinoe, part of a U.S. soccer team who also kneeled during a game in Thailand. The fact that people not necessarily of African American descent or of color are protesting to bring awareness and a strong push for change shows a strong sense of unity and rightful act towards justice for people that have faced not only discrimination but have been victimized by others simply for their race or skin color. This protest began as a defiance against a flag that stands tall claiming to protect every American, but often let hatred towards people of color grow amongst society and manifest itself

Colin Kaepernick, the current backup-QB for the 49ers, made headlines by choosing not to stand during the playing of the national anthem of the United States. Pregame: Athletes Making Their Stand Koa Ahgeak University of Alaska Anchorage In Dave Zirin’s essay “Pregame” (Zirin, 2017), he argues that famous pro athletes are starting to realize how much of a change they can make in this world with their actions they do on or off of the court/field by making a “conscious political stand for justice,” (Zirin, 2017, p. 424). He proves his point by providing examples about the 2009 Miami Heat NBA team making a political stand for justice for a young African American teen named Travyon Martin who was shot and killed by a self appointed neighborhood watch leader because he had his hood on which “some pundits in their infinite wisdom believed made him suspicious” (Zirin, 2017, p. 424). A large amount of hip hop and r&b is riddled with offensive stereotypes about women being “hoes” and “thots” who are only good for sexual gratification. Although many of these songs do not specify which race of people they are speaking of the videos of these songs usually contain mostly Black women and men.
