Mark Weiner Character Analysis

The author of the novel,¨Heather , the totality¨, is Mark Weiner and he is an american writer and producer for television and other screen work.This is weiners first and only novel. Weiner does a wonderful job of foiling his characters. He sets up an omniscient narration which lets the reader develop,sympathize, and connect more with each of the characters. Mark Breakstone, Heather s father, brings the story together and gives the story a purpose. Mark is selfless, respectful, and exploited by the other characters which shows the reader that even the most kind and normal people have breaking points. Unlike the other characters in the novel Mark is selfless. Mark continuously tries to make Heather and Karen both happy which is hard because Karen is materialistic, selfish, and vain. At one point in the novel Weiner explains Mark´s mindset stating ¨he had brought the construction on all of them by never making enough money to buy the penthouse¨ (70). Heather does not realize the hard work that her father puts in; Karen uses his money for her own fun as well as, puts down most of his ideas. The reader sees Marks frustration unfold when bobbys lustful looks for Heather push him to the edge. Mark tells Karen that something must be done but each time she ¨reasoned with him that...the idea of relocating this late in the game seemed silly¨(Weiner 89). Mark continualsly gets used and shut down and eventually snaps. Mark notices Bobby staring at Heather in an inappropriate manor. He tells Karen about what he has witnessed. His opinions are seen as ¨irrational¨ according to her and he is immediately ignored. It gets to the point where Mark loses his temper because Karen wont listen to him and, makes him feel stupid for thinking Bobby is dangerous. At the end of the novel Mark has reached his boiling point and will no longer be
