The novel Krik? Krak! is a group of small passages about different situations and a mixture of different lifestyles. The use of similar plots helps tie all nine of the passages together. The author, Edwidge Danticat, is a Haitian based writer who has built these stories around life in Haiti. A Wall of Rising Fire happened to be one of the more complex part of the novel. The title of this passage came from a line in a play that Little Guy was chose to play a role in. The line from the play corresponds with the atmosphere of the story. The themes of A Wall of Fire Rising are freedom and hope. Guy, Lili, and Little Guy were stuck in the arms of struggle throughout this chapter. As parents, they sacrificed their own freedom to barely provide for Little Guy. Guy had to work in a sugar mill doing dirty jobs to make ends meet. Lili refused to have her son follow the footsteps of his father to the sugar mill job. She is so encouraging about the play because it is a different approach to life. In their town everyone is poor and the same. The women stay home and take care of the house while the men work at the sugar mill. Gut encounters some strange jobs just to hardly support his family so he has to depend on the sugar mill job. The sugar mill is owned by a rich family who could care less about how guy fed his family. His family and his lifestyle is a constant reminder of everything he fails to do as a father and husband. There is a wedge between his fantasy life of living poverty free and the reality of his poor life. Lili and Guy value life in different ways which cause conflict between the two. Lili wants Guy to leave the fantasy life alone and focus on the life he has. She is a dependable mother while Guy does not know how to face reality. A Wall of Rising Fire is a story that describes the two different type of people we encounter during desperate times such as poverty.
