Good Vs. Evil In Bless Me, Ultima

Midterm Report Imagine being in a situation where you are undecided but feel an intense pressure to come up a decision. Moreover, that decision is pertaining to family and the cultural values within. When being a Chicano you face obstacles like no other person because you live in the middle of two different cultures. Throughout the novel “Bless me, Ultima” the main focus is moral independence. The novel is important in Chicano literature because it combines both American and Mexican cultures into one whole. In the novel Bless me Ultima, Antonio the major character faces conflicts as early as his childhood. One example is the two different sides to his family; Luna and the Marez. From the side of the Luna they are devout farmers who strongly worship the earth and the moon. On the other hand, the Marez are completely different. …show more content…
The two characters that unfold this theme throughout the novel are Ultima and Tenorio. Ultima is supposed to be the good, protecting her community and people against evil. While on the other hand, Tenorio shares the taste of cruelty and evil with his daughters. Ultima is seen good because she performs many good deeds for her people but, is questioned when she kills two of Tenorio’s daughters. The result of this causes Tenorio to attempt to murder Ultima in return to avenge his daughters. Family expectations can always come with a great deal of pressure even more so if it is a tight-knit family. This is another theme that unfolds in Bless me, Ultima. Since Antonio has a tight-knit family they have a heavy presents when it comes to his future. Antonio wants to determine his own future but, has trouble with pressure. While his mother wants him to become a farmer priest. His dad wants him to become a vaquero like him. The only way he gets some relieve from this pressure is when Ultima comes around because he feels he gains some independence and is away from the expectations of his
