The Character Of Ignatius In A Confederacy Of Dunces

Improved Essays
In the novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, Ignatius is not the best when it comes to understanding people. When he meets a man named Dorian, nothing changes. Dorian is amused by Ignatius ‘originality’ and humors what he says. But when Dorian insists that Ignatius is nuts, Ignatius starts to insult the gay community. But when Ignatius see’s that the Gay community in New Orleans is larger than he thought, even extending to the military, he decides to work with them.
The gay community in New Orleans has a rich history. It hosts the oldest gay bar in America Cafe Lafitte in Exile, opened in 1953. Before that, the original owners owned Lafitte Blacksmith Shop. Which was another gay bar opened 1936, before losing their lease. (A Rich Gay Heritage).

Everyone is in costume and is enjoying their selves at the party. Ignatius seems quite surprised by the ‘wild behavior’. When he tries to make a speech, however, no one seems to care. Ignatius eventually gets kicked out by three lesbians, for not dancing with a man named Timmy. These three women get arrested later for causing a huge fight in the French Quarter.
This party reminds me of the Krewe of Yuga (Brief History of Gay). The Krewe of Yuga was the first major gay Krewe in New Orleans. It was founded in the late 1950s, and they were forced to keep things private. The parties they had were mostly hosted in private homes of members (LGBT Mardi Gras). Much like how Dorian’s party was at his own home.
The Krewe of Yuga’s first public ball was shut down by police before it could even get started. This was most likely due to the location choice, it being a private public school (Brief History of Gay). The Krewe still continued to have parties, however. Often mocking nobility by having Queen, King, Captain, debutantes and maids (LGBT Mardi Gras). The Krewe of Yuga is no longer around, but they did give birth to serval small

Claiming that the contest was fueling moral decay. The city even tried to make it harder by enforcing their own rules and restrictions. But neither of those really changed anything. Reporters from around the world came to record the events (Annual Bourbon Street Awards).
Another important event for the gay community during Mardi Gras is the Fat Monday Luncheon. Starting in 1949 and still going on today (Campanella). It started out small just one man, Bob Demmons, wanting to entertain his friends. He surprised them by crowning a queen and having a horse-drawn carriage. In the 60s it grew to almost 55 people. Now it is a group of over 200 people (About Fat Monday). However, just because they have good events and a large community, means they are at peace.
It could be augured that Toole, author of A Confederacy of Dunces, was homophobic. Due to the way he portrayed them in his novel. The females are shown to be butch and used to be punishers for Lana Lee. The men are shown to be a lot like prostitutes. With Timmy being chained to a wall and enjoying it. In fact, during the 1960s America was filled with police raids on gay communities (The Stonewall Riot). Much like the Krewe of Yuga’s first public

A man transcends those things that compose him, greater than the sum of his parts; but, suppose a man builds himself off of a foundation of lies, to himself and to others. Mr. Duffy of “A Painful Case” and Gabriel of “The Dead” serve as chief examples of this deception by living lives designed to impress upon others a view of a certain kind of man: one versed in matters of the mind and of society. They both engage with women betrothed, by oath or soul, to others, they dislike Dublin and her people, and they both find that they simply aren’t the men whom they believed themselves to be. A man may think himself the archangel, when he merely fails to see that he forgot to get out of character; so it is, also, with those seeking the title “übermensch.”…

I have never take issue with a person's choice of who to love or what they choose to do in the privacy of their home. Because I was raised to be tolerant and love everyone, I consider myself a straight ally to the gay community. By not being a member, I can see a need for legal aid within the community and recognized that despite Supreme Court Rulings, and societal advancements the LGBT community is often still marginalized.…

Oscar Wilde does an excellent job utilizing Heteronormativity and Homosocialality to portray masculinity throughout his book, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Heteronormativity is the idea that heterosexuality is the only established sexual orientation. While, Homosocialality focuses more on the idea that men can bond with men without being labeled homosexual. The three main characters, Basil, Lord Henry and Dorian, experience many situations that illustrate these two theories. There is also an erotic triangle that links the two enemies, Basil and Lord Henry, to a romance which is Dorian.…

It can be said that within the core of every human being, lies a certain amount of darkness. While this is true, it can also be said that this internal darkness can only surface given the right opportunity and within the right environment. However, once this darkness does manage to emerge, its force is powerful enough to destroy the very part of us that makes us human. This darkness and evilness of man is a prominent theme reflected in the setting, plot structure, and characterization of Joseph Conrad’s, Heart of Darkness and Oscar Wilde’s, The Picture of Dorian Gray.…

“The picture of Dorian Gray” was originally published in Lippincots monthly magazine in June 1890. The novel is gothic melodrama, with elements of the comedy of manners-genre and is written according to the end of the Victorian era. Crafted in brilliant prose, the book is of lasting importance, as a singular example of Wilde’s wit and satirical talents. The reader follows the tale of Dorian Gray, a young man, who is corrupted and poisoned by the influences around him as his soul decays. Being absolutely shocking to its time, due to the austere theories featured in the novel, including hedonism, individualism and the somewhat morbid elements it also includes, the novel received substantial criticism and hysterical protest.…
