The gay community in New Orleans has a rich history. It hosts the oldest gay bar in America Cafe Lafitte in Exile, opened in 1953. Before that, the original owners owned Lafitte Blacksmith Shop. Which was another gay bar opened 1936, before losing their lease. (A Rich Gay Heritage). …show more content…
Everyone is in costume and is enjoying their selves at the party. Ignatius seems quite surprised by the ‘wild behavior’. When he tries to make a speech, however, no one seems to care. Ignatius eventually gets kicked out by three lesbians, for not dancing with a man named Timmy. These three women get arrested later for causing a huge fight in the French Quarter.
This party reminds me of the Krewe of Yuga (Brief History of Gay). The Krewe of Yuga was the first major gay Krewe in New Orleans. It was founded in the late 1950s, and they were forced to keep things private. The parties they had were mostly hosted in private homes of members (LGBT Mardi Gras). Now it is a group of over 200 people (About Fat Monday). However, just because they have good events and a large community, means they are at peace.
It could be augured that Toole, author of A Confederacy of Dunces, was homophobic. Due to the way he portrayed them in his novel. The females are shown to be butch and used to be punishers for Lana Lee. The men are shown to be a lot like prostitutes. With Timmy being chained to a wall and enjoying it. In fact, during the 1960s America was filled with police raids on gay communities (The Stonewall Riot). Much like the Krewe of Yuga’s first public
