Paul, her oldest child, thinks the only way for her to love him is if she is rich. Paul does everything he can to provide for his mother and to make her happy. When his mother reads the note that she will receive 1000 pounds for her birthday for the next five years, she goes straight to the lawyer to ask him to release the whole 5000 immediately, Paul was disappointed that this was not enough for her. Paul is unsure of his choice of horse in the upcoming derby, it ends up making him very ill. Paul ends up dying in his sleep after he discovers he made the correct choice and won the bet. Ultimately trying to make his mother happy, is his death.
The thematic differences that differ from the stories are, in the first short story, “Anna on the Neck”, although Anna made family sacrifices, in the end she learned nothing from her elevation in social standing and the wealth she married into. Anna was focused on staying popular and her social success, she spent most of her time with other men, acting in plays, and dinners, all while her father’s health deteriorated and her brothers went hungry. The mother became greedy when she came into her wealth, she wanted more, which ultimately lead to Paul’s death. She then realized in the end that Paul meant more to her than her fortune. Anna became greedy, Sarty turned on his family, and the mother regrets her son’s death because of her greed.
In the first short story, “Anna on the Neck”, the element of fiction that helps develop the theme would be character. The way Anna views life changes so much in this short story. Anne becomes successful and in the end, she did not care for her family. Initially Anna marries Modest Alexeitch to improve her family 's status but it is pretty ironic how at the end Anna neglects her family. She is described as being afraid of her husband at the start of the story. However, once she gains the confidence to stand up to him, and spend his money without fear, he becomes the one that is
