Reading a nonfictional book first and then seeing the movie is one good way of recognizing the changes made from the book to the movie. Twelve Years A Slaves book tells the story of Solomon Northup. Solomon Northrop was a free man that lived in upstate New York who was kidnapped and then sold into slavery in 1841. Northup narrates the book himself and tells of his experiences being held captive and sold into slavery for twelve years as a free man. In attempt to tell the story, Brad Pitt released the movie “12 Years a Slave” in 2014. The movie is directed by Steven McQueen. In the novel, Northup was being hung because he fought a white slave merchant and won the fight. He was saved from the hanging by the owner because he owed a mortgage on him. In the book the family knew what happened to Northrop but just needed to find him. Once the Northup family received notice where Northup was they had to go through a lot of red tape with the law in New York but had help due to the law that was passed in New York to assist those that were kidnapped into slavery. The movie however shows that, Northup got in a fight with the white slave merchant and won; he was being hung but was saved by the owner because of his kindness and throughout the family was shown in wonderment as if they did not know what happened to Northup.

Reading a nonfictional book gives a clear view of the story, and one should always expect changes when it is turned into a movie. Reading the ‘Twelve Years a Slave’ novel first gives the advantage in knowing what scenes have been taken out or if a scene was added that’s not happened at all in the book. The main changes and discrepancies in the movie intends to make the story more traumatic so a person can see and feel what Nortrop went through.
