In recent years, teachers have been finding creative ways to reinforce the lessons taught. The most common method happens to be viewing movies in class. The Martian is a fascinating film about the adventures of Mark Watney as he is abandoned on Mars during a failed exploration. He is left with only limited amount of food and water, as well as the knowledge in botany and mechanical engineering. Watching movies such as The Martian in class, helps engage the student and prevent boredom. Everyday, a student goes to school and hears lesson after lesson, which can provoke them to lose their concentration. As it is written by Melissa Kelly in the article “Pros and Cons of Using Movies in Class”, “ While this is not an excuse to show a non-educational movie, this could be a good time to watch something on the topic you are teaching” (Kelly 1). This quote is implying that though movies may not always be the best option, it is the correct path on days students are unfocused on the lesson. In addition to this, movies could also be used in a method that may influence students’ interests. As stated, “Sometimes a movie can really help students get a feel for an era or an event” (Kelly 1). Often student tend to have a better understanding for the topic when they see visuals for it. Once having a better understanding of the lesson, kids have the chance to branch out into smaller, similar topics. This not only lets them expand on their thinking, but inspires young students to bring the best out of them.
