Analysis Of The Movie: Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck

In the entertainment industry, a movie is a way to deliver various form of art from a story, acting, music, etc as one spectacle. From generation to generation, a movie is also used to deliver thought of the writer from just a simple romantic love story, politic issues, social critic, etc. One of the movies which I find really interesting is an Indonesian movie, “Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck.” (Sinking of Van der Wijck). “Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wickj” (Sinking of Van der Wickj) is an adaptation of Indonesian Literature book with the same title penned by Buya Hamka. Hamka is one of the best writers in his era. Apart from writing literature books, he was also a religious and political activist who strived for Indonesian Independence. Therefore, it is not surprising to find thick religious, politics, cultural elements in Hamka’s masterpieces. The original version of the book was first released in 1938 while the movie adaptation of the book was produced later in 2013 by Sunil Soraya. The director of the movie tried his best to stick with the original storyline. The movie itself is 165 minutes duration and the main character Zainuddin is played by rising Indonesian actor, Herjunot Ali. Herjunot Ali who played as Zainuddin successfully gives unique emotional touches to the character he was playing. Moreover, his thick Makassar (Bugis) accent, dramatic posture, and poetic dialogues he delivered easily attract and draw sympathy from the audiences. Pevita Peace who was playing as Hayati seemed to have difficulties in getting into her role as a plain village girl. Even though her acting was a little bit awkward, she delivered the impression of a village girl of 1930 successfully. Meanwhile, the role of Aziz was played effortlessly by Reza Rahardian who won Best Indonesian Actor Award
