Being a foster child, it is already difficult for Callie to figure out who she is. For instance, “Studies have shown that foster care adolescents exhibit feelings of obligatory guardianship over blood siblings who are also in foster care”(Hazen, 2016). This relates to Callie because throughout the show Callie serves a parent role to her brother Jude, and that seems to be her main purpose. Moreover, when Callie finds her hobby which is photography, it is a way to keep her mind busy with all the chaos and priorities she has.It is helpful for her because “social activities have been shown to serve as a protective factor against foster care placement disruptions”(Hazen, 2016). It is the time when “...systematic logical thinking and by the ability to understand and systematically manipulate abstract concepts”(Berger, 2014). In other words, Callie is thinking logically, which involves using valid reasoning rather than emotion. Honestly, Callie sometimes uses her emotions to prove a point, but she is using her brain in a more complex way. This stage she is in, is useful in school, in order to learn math and about politics.
