Short Term 12 Analysis

Improved Essays
Short Term 12 (2013) is an inspiring movie to watch; the director/writer Destin Daniel Cretton put real life situations in this movie and it is so touching. Short Term 12 is full of hope; this is a place that children go as a safe haven and the main characters Grace and Mason are in charge of helping and caring for the children. As the children get older and turn 18 they have to leave Short Term 12. Also Grace and Jayden have learned a lot about each other; consequently, they find out that they have experienced the same circumstances. Grace and Jayden’s relationship is realistic and emotionally affecting, and Brie Larson and Kaitlyn Dever give outstanding and hopeful performances, respectively. Brian Viner, critic for Daily Mail, also claims …show more content…
They use humor many different ways to get out of situations. An example is when Mason (John Gallagher Jr.) had made a joke when Jayden had a breakdown, Jayden threw a cupcake in Grace’s face and Mason was like “Grace how was my cupcake”, to loosen up the tension in the room. Another example is when Nate (Rami Malek) tried to rap when Marcus (Keith Stanfield) was rapping; this humor was just to have fun. Allison Loring, critic for Film School Rejects, also states Short Term 12 will be having you laughing one minute and tearing up in the next. Also before every day starts or during break Mason always tells a joke or a funny story that has happened at Short Term 12 while working there. Also when the children have time to go and play the workers were training Nate and they told Nate not to get to involved so two girls asked him to jump rope with them and his response was “no sorry” even though that is not what the workers meant. Lastly, Jayden was getting introduced to the rest of the children and Jayden says, “Please don’t be offended if I’m not very friendly, but I am going to be living with my dad soon and I don’t really like wasting time on short term relationships so you know it’s nothing personal” and Luis says, “wow she sounds like a really nice …show more content…
Grace ends up going to therapy, and ends up being pregnant and keeping the child, Marcus ends up surviving, and Jayden ends up at a safe place. The very ending to the movie was the same as the beginning of the movie. This is where Sammy runs out of the facility and the workers have to chase him down. This is a perfect ending because at the end of the movie it was more of Sammy wanting to get chased and not like in the beginning where he was actually trying to get away. This shows how much the children improve while staying there. Peter Bradshaw, critic for The Guardian, claims that there 's a too-cute-to-be-true ending to this US indie movie by the much-acclaimed young director Destin Cretton; I couldn 't buy it, and found myself wondering if I had kept the receipt for the rest of the film too. This is not correct because after everything that the people have been through there needs to be at least something that turns out

Tensions erupt like a volcano when the main characters, Izzy and her mother, don’t “see eye to eye” in Jennifer Cervantes’ excerpt from Tortilla Sun (Cervantes 21). Starting in the tile-flecked kitchen first thing in the morning and ending in Izzy’s dungeon-like bedroom moments later, the text lets us as readers eavesdrop on a conversation about moving that boils over rather quickly. When all is said and done, parent and child are left separated by a closed door (as well as vastly different perspectives on their journeys away from home). Essentially, the ways that Izzy and her mom look at the prospect of moving for the summer are so different that it sparks a conflict full of frustration, leaving their relationship torn and tattered. First and foremost, conflict in the form of frustration…

Health and nutrition have been an essential part of life since the beginning of time, but more recently these topics are shared and examined more frequently than ever, especially in America. In Michael Pollan’s article “Our National Eating Disorder,” Claudia Kalb’s “Food News Blues,” and Karin Kratina’s “The Right Thing to Do?” it is made apparent that how we eat may be just as important as what we eat. These three authors make very valid points about American’s obsession with health fads and negative thinking towards many food groups.…

The movie Grace Is Gone by James Stokes, is a remarkable movie about a family who are going through the lost of loved one, and don’t know how to take the next necessary steps to move on. Grace is Gone, is a movie that I wouldn’t think would hit home with me from simply reading the title. Little to be told, at different moments in the movie I had to stop myself from shedding tears, because I am a daughter of a man who is in the military. For the twenty out of my twenty-four years of life my dad has been fighting for this country. I sympathize with Dawn and Heidi especially, because my worst nightmare turned into their reality and that is something that I prayed will never happened to my dad.…

Before reading Unwind, I was indifferent about abortion. I knew abortion was wrong, but it is so common in today’s society that I’ve become numb to the idea. I’ve heard every excuse for why abortion is “Okay” and I thought people are going to do what they want to do. This thought never bothered me because I’ve never been in the position that many people are in when they have to make that choice. While I was reading Unwind, I realized how awful and cruel it is to unwind teenagers who actually have a way to say no and escape the corrupt system.…

No offense to film critics, but it doesn 't take a genius to tell a good movie apart from a waste of time you 'll never get back. Motion picture films date back to the late 1800s, each film different from the last. However, that doesn 't mean everything that makes it onto a theatre is worth viewing. There are certain components that make a great film and can be proven true throughout all genres no matter when they premiered. Now, I 've seen my fair share of films and have come to the conclusion that a film worthwhile is one that is able to attract the audiences with familiar sense of prevalence that is able to leave an impression and invites you to watch it over and over again.…
