Philadelphia Story Play Analysis

Philadelphia Story was a play put on by the theater department at the University of North Texas, performed in a proscenium. This worked well because of the big stage you could have a big set, which in this play, was amazing. The play starts with the main character Tracy writing thankyou notes for the gifts she has received for her upcoming wedding, which happens to be the following day. After being introduced to all the characters you learn that this isn’t Tracy’s first wedding, but she use to be married to a man named Dexter. If wedding stress isn’t enough Tracy’s brother informs her that there will be a reporter coming but, that he is actually there just to find dirt on the family. Once we are introduced to Mike (the reporter) you learn that he is upset because he has been pulled from writing about significant stories to extravagant weddings. The middle of the play is where things get interesting, we learn the reason why Tracy and Dexter divorced, and the audiences learn that George is more in love with the thought of Tracy, then Tracy herself. Right now reality television is popular, the biggest show is Keeping up with the Kardashians, which is about a family who comes from a rich father and start a lot of drama. Philadelphia Story is about a rich girl named Tracy who has no talent but comes from a rich father, and once you see the play you will see Tracy is no stranger to drama as well. They both even had major wedding scandals. Another thing that is great about this play is how the play writer Philip Barry made Tracy be a parody of the upper class. Giving her the last name “Lord” in a time when the great depression just hit, and all she cares about is fishing her thank-you notes, while other people are trying to
