Leo Buscaglia wrote that “Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a smile, a kind war, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” This explains how empathy can be a solution to a better society because it can prevent dangerous problems and deaths from happening. In the course of being in college English honors we have read plenty of articles and the book Night which relates to or shows empathy. Me and my classmates learned about conflicts in the Holocaust, with the bystander effect, and in the story “The Lottery”. If looking at it in my perspective the Holocaust and the bystander effect can be decreased if only more people …show more content…
In this assignment the Kitty Genovese story shows how tragic the bystander effect is and how apathetic people are. The story is about how a woman who was stabbed by a man while people ignored, and called the police only after she was already dead. The empathetic idea of this assignment is people would want help if they were in Kitty Genovese’s situation, so why not do the same? The bystander effect increases a negative aspects to the world and if people start showing that they care or help in hostile situations could increase empathy in societies. First of all, in the article “Dying Girl who no one helped” it states, “ . . . 38 of Kitty’s neighbors who admitted they witnessed the awful event. They heard the screams and most understood her cry for help. Peeking out their windows, many saw enough of the killer to provide a good description of his appearance and clothing. My evidence includes the three assignments is “Kitty Genovese Article Reflections”, “Elie Wiesel Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech”, and “The Lottery” Theme Reflection which all has a problem with the lack of empathy due to their conflicts. In the assignment “Kitty Genovese Article Reflection” is involved in the bystander effect which is like a act where people do not stand up when they witnessed a hostile situation. This leaves the question “ You would want someone to help you in their situation, so why would you not do the same?’’ to the bystanders. The assignment “Elie Wiesel Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech” basically demonstrates how Elie is empathic to his culture because he wants to make change due to how the world could stand by and be silent as people suffered, died, and were killed in the terrible experience of the Holocaust. In the assignment “The Lottery” Theme Reflection there an unfair way to justify things in your community to keep it in check, and people do not seem to see the problem in it until they win the lottery. These assignments illustrate a huge matter to the world it relates back to the bystander effect and how it can just build conflicts in society just by not doing nothing in situations where help is needed, but also because of how someone realizes not being helped when you most need it is unfair.
