Caleb continuously mentions that he feels as though Catherine is disrespectful towards him, this could cause a strain in how he perceives himself as well as how he thinks Catherine perceives him. However, Catherine feels as though Caleb does not contribute towards anything and she has to maintain the role of primary provider for both her home as well as her mother and father. Both issues cause conflicting viewpoints and Catherine and Caleb are no longer a complementary couple. From my own personal viewpoint, I think their marriage started to go wrong when they stopped properly communicating with each other. It appears that Caleb has had problems with pornography prior to the timeframe that the film begins at and it is clear that there are a lot of unresolved issues that the two face. At one point, Catherine mentions to her friends that their problems began long ago and Caleb confides in Michael that her attitude change was simply “out of the blue.” I think that had the couple discussed their issues and received some sort of therapy when one party began to notice these problems, perhaps the situation would have not elevated to the level that it did.
Overall, I thought this was a really great film and a good example of how a relationship can go wrong, but still find a way to get back on course.
