The Angel Arrives By Gabriel Garcia Marquez Analysis

Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s story, which was published in 1968, tells of the appearance of an angel in a couple’s courtyard. This story shows that there can be good and evil as well as not judging a book by its’ cover. Marquez shows that the appearance of the angel is not what many think of when thinking of angels. Many have the picture in their mind that angels are beautiful, white and feathery creatures. The angel in this story is anything but the images of angels that we typically see. This story shows that although what was thought of as a bad omen of the angel coming for the child turns into a blessing for the family, although possibly not with the best of intentions.

Arriving in town was one such show that had a girl that was turned into a spider for not following the rules of her parents. The spider girl was very open to her visitors “full of so much human truth and with such a fearful lesson, was bound to defeat without even trying that of a haughty angel who scarcely deigned to look at mortals.” (Marquez, 1968, para. 10) Very few miracles were attributed to the angel, with a blind man growing three teeth or the leper “whose sores sprouted sunflowers” (Marquez, 1968, para. 10) and many lost interest in the angel due to the lack of granting the requests of the many
