A Dancer In The Dark Analysis

Great Essays
I am critiquing the film “Dancer in the Dark.” I have seen this movie twice, once on my own in October and again with my family in November. I chose this movie because it is on a list of sad movies I got from YouTube that I peruse when I am in the mood. I watched this movie alone, in my dorm room, on my laptop. The watching process was very smooth and pleasant. I did not have any distractions or interruptions and it streamed perfectly. Towards the end of the film I was so frustrated and emotional that I vowed never to watch this film again (which I ended up breaking).
“A Dancer in the Dark” is about the struggles of Selma Ježková, a single-mother Czech immigrant living in poverty and also going blind. Though this life is difficult, Selma is

She is very dynamic. On the outside she may seem weak and naïve but she is actually very strong. She loves her son very much but is not able to buy him presents because she wants him to get eye surgery so he does not have to go through the same struggles she does. One of her biggest flaws may be what makes her the happiest, her passion for musicals. This passion often causes her to get distracted in her own word and gets her into trouble. Bill is the antagonist of the story. Though he is a cop and should be honorable and honest, his fear of losing his wife drives him to do terrible and selfish things to Selma which ultimately kills her.
The theme of “Dancer in the Dark” seems to be about the harshness of reality. This story proves life is not always fair and even if you are a hard and honest worker everything could still go wrong. I think this is also a lesson and greed and selfishness and how it can completely fog over your good judgement. Though this theme was very frustrating and painful to watch, it is important to know that this is reality for some

I have seen realism movies and movie musicals but have never seen a combination done in this manner. The contrast of the musicals to reality was so perfect and chilling. This move did not have a happy ending like a majority of movies do which I believe is important to contract what we are used to. I was team Selma the entire time. Selma was played by the actress, Björk who I have known as a singer but did not know as an actress until I saw this movie. Björk did such an amazing job that I wonder if this part was written specifically for her. Her performance throughout the movie was incredibly honest. The way Selma was developed was amazing and so convincing. Not only is Björk a great actress but she is also a great singer. She has a very powerful and unique quality to her voice that resonates in every musical piece. I vowed never to watch this movie again because of how frustrating and sad it is. But, I found it more important to share this film with my family. I was not sure what to expect going into this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. This movie was amazing in a very unconventional way. Everything down to the shaky camera work fed into the dark and realistic tone of the film

While I loved many things about this movie, I must say that if you don't necessarily enjoy musicals, you definitely wouldn't like this movie. There were so many songs in this movie that they played almost every 5 minutes which I believed interfered with the story and made it seem less realistic because I have never seen a group of people singing and dancing outside my window. I think a few of the most catchy songs would have added a bit of fun to the movie but so many made it more of a…

In Dancing All Night, we catch up with the members of the Investigation Team half a year after the ordeal of the Midnight Channel. Rise has enlisted the aid of Yu and the others to assist in her comeback as an idol by serving as her backup dancers. She is headlining the Love Meets Bonds festival together with an exciting up-and-coming act called Kanamin Kitchen - whose members later disappear under mysterious circumstances. There is an eerily familiar rumor closely tied to the festival; if one logs on to the official website at midnight, a video of a presumed dead idol dancing plays. If one watches the sinister movie to the end, one's shadow is transported to the other side, leaving behind a comatose husk.…

Selma is an Oscar nominated movie for Best Picture; the first film directed by a black female director (Ava Du Vernay) in history. The movie is based on the year of 1965 during the Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches, it shows the last final stages of the Civil Rights Movement. The sequence chosen for this analysis is the sequence where Dr. King (David Oyelowo) arrives to Selma. At his arrival to the “Black Belt” region of central Alabama Dr. King and his colleges direct themselves to the Hotel Albert where he gets “sucker punched” in the face by the manager of the establishment; an establishment that only served the “whites”. The sequence in general represents the violence that was still exhibited towards the “negroes” during the segregation…

The novel Night was written as a first hand account of the actual events that took place during the Holocaust nearing the end of the Second World War. This account of the Holocaust underlies themes, not only of the Holocaust, but also of World War 2 itself. Some of these themes include the theme of darkness, not just the title of the story, but the physical and non-physical senses of the word. Another of these themes includes faith, particularly in Judaism, but also religion all across the world as they pertain to various ethical and moral decisions.…

The collections of works shown in the Evening of Dance performance were very engaging. The three Booker T. Washington ensembles: World Repertory Ensemble, Repertory Dance Company 1, and Repertory Dance Company 2 were all able to convey the ideal emotions and create a visceral reaction. World Repertory Ensemble’s piece “Sofa” a traditional African performance choreographed by Moussa Diabate started the concert, the end of the first act was Repertory Dance Company 2’s “9/Tenths of the Law” a very unpredictable piece choreographed by Andy Noble, and the piece that separated these particularly upbeat and climatic works was Repertory Dance Company 1’s elegant performance of “Concerto Six Twenty-two – 1st Movement” originally choreographed by Lar…

Though a lot of movies dealing with social oppression are very gloomy, this movie was light hearted and made people think as well. I was surprised at the amount of nudity in the film because I was not expected that for a long period of time. I feel like it really did not add anything to the story, but since they were loose women at a bar, the part fit well. It just did not have to have about 5 minutes of full on nudity with the progress of the movie not moving forward. I did like the fact that the author symbolized the old men as nature versus nurture.…

Selma, a film directed by Ava DuVernay shows us Dr. Martin Luther King’s success in fighting all who challenged him in order to give the African American people the right to vote. This film outlines the harsh three-month period of King’s (with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s help) struggle in an attempt to secure what he believes is a basic American right, the right to vote, against extremely violent white supremacist. This was all made much more difficult due to the fact that he demanded his protests be non-violent. Towards the end of the film, more Caucasian people that believed in his cause also joined the protests, the most notable one being the march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery. Finally, President Lyndon Johnson (the…

This movie reflects real life in multiple ways. I think one of the biggest lessons that someone could pull from this movie is that there is a price that everyone must pay. The Warden paid the price for his crimes when he knew he had an innocent man in jail just for him to use Andy for his accounting skills. The Warden ended up committing suicide and I feel that was the ultimate penitence that the Warden had to pay in order for his crimes to be forgiven.…
